BENENDEN, Kent – St George.

Altar and other additions 1911-1920

The altar in the Lady Chapel is very similar to that at St. Mark, Hadlow Down.  Observation and documentation point to some of the other additions being the flooring in Lady Chapel, and the furnishings in the children’s corner.  According to the church guide book’s architectural history, the south chancel was newly furnished in memory of two sisters of the Gathorne Hardy family.  This area is now the Lady chapel, which corroborates my observation.

Observation also suggests that the oak screens are probably also by Fellowes Prynne.

The postcard illustrated, showing the chapel with Fellowes Prynne’s distinctive altar, was posted in 1914.  The oak screen is also clearly visible.
