CHARING, Kent – St Peter and St Paul.

War Memorial rood screen 1921

The screen is in keeping with the smaller scale of the building. It is of oak, with panels to the height of the priests’ stalls on either side. It has the usual opening gates. The bevelled uprights and delicate tracery support a platform itself topped with fine carving. The rood figures, and angels either end, are unusual in that they contrast with the wood of the plinths and cross to which they are fixed. The figures are of a lighter coloured wood, and the effect of this against the dark chancel ceiling is striking.
