WESTMINSTER, London – St Mark North Audley Street.

War memorial and reredos 1919

This reredos is exceptional in that it contains relief carving in the centre, in white stone, with paintings on the outside.

The paintings are believed to be possibly by the architect’s son, Harold, who also became an architect.

A letter (undated) from Dart and Francis archives spoke of …alterations to War Memorial Chapel, including reredos.  This suggests their involvement at least in the woodwork.

The chapel is illustrated here, from a loose page from an old guidebook, about which I have no information.  Below this are images of the reredos, with its relief carving and paintings.  Note that some carved wood seems to have been removed from the centre panel, when compared with the first illustration.
