SKIRWITH, Cumbria – St John the Evangelist.

Additions 1919-22

The archive records which were available in the 1980s of the firm of Dart and Francis gave the following information:

  • Apr 1919 – initial request for estimates for oak fittings, riddels, no.4 angels, altar and rails.
  • 18 Dec 1919 – oak chapel altar – £25
  • 1 May 1920 – oak riddels – £40 exclusive of angels (“no.4 angels” £8 extra each)
  • 28 Jun 1920 – gilding
  • 6 Dec 1922 – drawings returned of riddels for Skipworth (sic – undoubtedly meant to be Skirwith.)

Note also that there is a parclose screen in oak all around the chapel which bears the hallmarks of Fellowes Prynne’s work – but this has not been verified.

The photographs show the oak altar, and an example of Dart and Francis’ “No. 4 Angels” as seen at Skirwith.
